A hawk swooped in!

On New Year's Day around 1887, when Tahachi Yoshimura, the founder of Zuiyo, opened the brewer's door to let in the sunlight, a hawk swooped in, chasing a sparrow. A hawk on New Year's Day is a sign of good fortune and this is how the name 'Zuiyo' came to be given to the sake.

 'Zuiyo' as a Tobacco product

In addition to sake production, the company also produced and sold tobacco during the reign of Hikotaro, the second generation. "The reason tobacco became a product was the Kumamoto area produced a lot of leaf tobacco," says Vice President Yoshimura. The brand name was 'Zuiyo' of course.

Zuiyo's building

Zuiyo's symbolic building is a four-story reinforced concrete sake brewery built in 1962. The brewing process flowed from the upper floor to the lower floor, and at its peak, the brewery produced 15,000 goku, twenty times the current production volume. The 38-meter-high chimney also was a landmark. However, it was removed due to cracks caused by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake.
